FTP Tutorial

USING WS_FTP FOR WINDOWS 3.x, 95, AND NT.
WS_FTP is a FTP client sofware program made by
IPSwitch. This FTP program is very easy to use, which is why we
support this program.
If you cannot find help here in solving your problem or connecting to our
server, check out
IPSwitch's FAQ Website on WS_FTP.
TOP
DOWNLOAD WS_FTP
First, you must have a copy of WS_FTP, you can download WS_FTP from the
StudioDeluxe.net FTP through your web browser by selecting on of the links
below.
ftp://ftp.StudioDeluxe.net/pub/ws_ftp/ws_ftp.zip
(16 bit version)
ftp://ftp.StudioDeluxe.net/pub/ws_ftp/ws_ftp32.zip
(32 bit version)
Go ahead and install WS_FTP on your computer, then open the program.
When you open the program you should see a window appear entitled,
"Session Properties".
Now we need to set some of the fields in this window so that you can
connect to the StudioDeluxe.net server.
SETTING THE HOST NAME/ADDRESS FIELD
This field tells the software program where to connect. You need to
connect to our server in order to upload and download files, among other
things.
Set the Host Name/Address to yoursite.com, where "yoursite.com" is your
actual domian name.
Here is what the field should look like:
SETTING THE HOST TYPE FIELD
This field tells the program what kind of protocol and Operating System
the webserver is using. You should see that the program defaults to
"Automatic Detect", this entry is correct and should not be changed.
Here is what the field should look like:
SETTING THE USER ID FIELD
This field tells the server what user is trying to log into the server.
When you signed up with StudioDeluxe.net, you chose your login (also
referred to as your userid). Enter your userid in this text area.
SETTING THE PASSWORD FIELD
This field tells the server the password for the userid (login) trying to
access the server. If the password is incorrect, the server will dispay
the message "503 Login incorrect." when you try to connect to the server.
Be sure to put the correct password in this field! We reccommend you
referring to the e-mail StudioDeluxe.net sent you when you signed up for
our services. This e-mail contains your login and password.
If you have changed your password be sure to enter you newest password,
old passwords obviously will not work!
SETTING THE SAVE PWD CHECKBOX
On the right side of the Password field you will see a checkbox labeled
"Save Pwd". Make sure to put a checkbox in this checkbox so that WS_FTP
will remember your password in future uses.
Make sure that you
do
not place a check in the "Anonymous" checkbox field. Checking
this box will cause you to log into our server with anonymous access, and
you will not be able to access you files.
Here is what these fields should look like:
SETTING OTHER FIELDS
If you see other fields, such as "Account" and/or "Comment", just leave
these fields blank. You now are ready to connect to the StudioDeluxe.net
server!
TOP
From the "Session Properties" window that appears when you open WS_FTP,
click the "OK" button. Now WS_FTP will attempt to log into your directory
on the server.
If you did everything correctly in the
SESSION PROPERTIES section you will now be logged into your
directory.
You should now see two windows, one entitled "Local System" and the other
"Remote System". The "Local System" window lists the files and directories
on your computer in a given directory. The "Remote System" is your files
and directories in your account.
Right after you log into your directory you should see a directory called
"public_html" along with various other files. Ignore these files, do not
delete or modify them. Now double click on the "public_html" directory
located in the "Remote System" window. Do NOT attempt to upload files into
this directory when you log in because you will not be able to see them
through your browser! You
must go into your "public_html" directory in order to upload files so
people can see them!
Now you are ready to begin uploading files, downloading files, and setting
permissions.
TOP
UPLOADING AND DOWNLOADING FILES
Now you can begin to upload and download files once you are in your "public_html"
directory. To verify that you are in your public_html directory, the
textarea with a white background directory below the "Remote System"
should display the following:
Before we can upload files to the server we need to make sure that we
select the correct settings. Different files require different methods of
uploading. For example, images (such as .jpg, .gif .bmp), applets
(.class), MIDIs (.mid, .midi), and executable and zip files (.exe, .zip,
.tar, .tgz)
all must be uploaded in binary mode. Text files (.txt) and HTML files
(.html, .htm. .shtml) must be uploaded in ASCII mode.
Please make sure to check the "Auto" checkbox towards the middle-bottom of
your window.
It is ok if the Binary or ASCII buttom has a dot in it as long as
"Auto" has a checkbox. Here is how it should look:
Now we can begin uploading files to the server. To upload a file, first
you must highlight the file you want upload in the "Local System" window.
For example, if you wanted to upload a new index.html page that was
located on your C: drive in the directory "website", you would need to
type the following in the textbox area on the white background directly
below the "Local System" window:
You can also move recursively down directories by double clicking the
arrow in the big window under "Local System". Eventually, you will get to
you C: drive. From your C: drive you just select whatever directory
contains the page you want to upload.
Now that we have the file highlighted on our "Local System", lets upload
it into our "public_html" directory. There are two simple ways to upload a
file:
Congratulations! You have now uploaded (transferred) files from your
computer to your account at StudioDeluxe.net Inc. Now lets download files.
Downloading files involves the same process as uploading, only we are
taking a file from our account and copying it to our hard drive. First we
want to highlight the file to be copied on the server, so we would
highlight the file under the "Remote System" window.
Now we need to choose where on our computer we want the file to reside.
Use the text area directly below the "Local System" to chose the folder
where you want this file to be downloaded.
There are two ways to download a file from the server:
-
Just double click the highlighted file under the "Remote System"
window--the file will automatically be copied to your computer from the
server. Keep in mind that your copy of the file on you computer will not
be moved, just copied
OR
-
After the file you want transferred is highlighted, just press the arrow
pointing to the "Local System" window located in the column between the
"Local System" and "Remote System" windows. When you press this arrow,
the file will automatically be copied to your computer in the directory
specified.
WS_FTP allows you to upload and download multiple files and/or directories
at once. To select multiple files to upload or download, just hold down on
the Shift key while highlighting those files you wish to to be uploaded or
downloaded, then proceed with the upload or download.
TOP
UPLOADING AND DOWNLOADING DIRECTORIES
Unlike uploading or downloading files, you need not worry about
specifying a transfer type (ASCII or Binary) when you are transferring
directories. Use the same procedures you would use with files: select the
directory to upload or download, double-click it or press the arrow key to
transfer it.
When you attempt to transfer a directory in WS_FTP, it will prompt you,
asking "Do you want to transfer the selected directory structures". Just
select "Yes". What this means is that WS_FTP is now going to transfer the
directory AND everything inside of it, including directories, files inside
those directories, and so on.
WS_FTP also allows you to transfer more than one directory at a time. Just
hold down on the Shift key while selecting multiple directories to
transfer. Now proceed as normal with the upload or download and those
selected directories will be transferred.
Yes, you can even select a combination of directories and files to
transfer. The same procedure rules, just hold down on the Shift key and
select those directories and files you want transferred. You can select as
many files and directories as you want to transfer.

CREATING DIRECTORIES
WS_FTP makes creating directories a snap! You can create directories from
WS_FTP on both your computer and in your account on the server. Most
likely you will want to create directories in your account on our server.
Make sure you are in the "public_html" directory of your account. There is
no reason to create directories in the root (/home/yourlogin) of your
account as these directories will be unavailable to visitors.
On the far right side of the WS_FTP window underneith the "Remote System"
window there is a button named "MkDir", which stands for make directory.
Go ahead and press this button. Now WS_FTP should prompt you, asking
"Enter new remote directory name:" along with a textbox.
Enter the name of the directory you would like created in your account.
For example, if you want a new directory named "super" created on
yourdomain.com, just type in "super" in this textbox, press "Ok" and it
will be created!
You can now access this directory (it is empty) from www.yourdomain.com/super.
Notice that there is also a "MkDir" button option under the "Local System"
window. This button does the same thing: it created a new directory only
on your computer, not on your account.
You can create directories within directories as well. For example, go
ahead and create a directory named "super", then go into that directory
(double click it) once it is created. Now create another directory, then
another. You can keep creating directories within directories.
TOP
RENAMING FILES AND DIRECTORIES
As some point you will want to rename files and directories from your
account. This saves time as you will not have to download the file, rename
it, then upload it.
You can only rename on file or directory at a time. You can rename files
and directories both on your computer (the "Local System") and within your
account (the "Remote System").
First select the file or directory you want renamed. Remember to select a
file or directory you just need to put your mouse over the file or
directory and click your mouse once.
Now look for the verical menu bars underneith both the "Remote System" and
"Local System" windows. There is a button named "Rename", press this
button to rename the file or directory you want renamed. WS_FTP will then
ask you for the new name of the file or directory. After you type in the
new name of this file of directory, press "Ok" to complete the renaming of
the file or directory.
Note: When renaming files in WS_FTP, remember that WS_FTP does not retain
the file extension! For example, if you want to change a file named "about.html"
to index.html, you need to type in "index.html". To change a file named "counter.pl"
to counter.cgi, you would need to type in "counter.cgi".

DELETING FILES AND DIRECTORIES
As some point you will want to remove files and directories from your
account. This process is very easy, and you can even delete multiple files
and/or directories at the same time.
Files and directories can be deleted on your computer (the "Local System")
and/or on in your account on the server (the "Remote System"). To delete
files or directories, first select the file or directory you want delted
by highlighting it.
Now look for the verical menu bars underneith both the "Remote System" and
"Local System" windows. There is a button named "Delete", press this
button to delete the file or directory you want deleted. WS_FTP will ask
you if you are sure you want to delete the associated file or directory.
Pressing "Yes" will complete the deletion of the file or directory.
When you attempt to delete a directory, make sure the directory you are
trying to delete is empty. WS_FTP will NOT allow you to delete a directory
which contains files or directories.
You can also select multiple files and/or directories to be deleted by
holding down on the Shift key while selecting files and directories (that
are empty, of course!) to be deleted. Remember you can delete files and
directories both on your computer and your account on the server.
TOP
VIEWING FILES ON THE SERVER
You can view files within your account on the server without downloading
them. However, if you wish to edit these files you must download them,
make the changes, then upload the new changes to the server.
To view a file within your account, first highlight the file. Next click
on your right mouse key and select "view" from the drop down menu. WS_FTP
will then display the selected file using Notepad.
TOP
SETTING PERMISSIONS ON FILES AND DIRECTORIES
Setting permissions on files and directories within your account is
primarly used for CGI/Perl scripts but can also be used to restrict people
from accessing certain directories or files within your account.
You can only select one file or directory at a time to set permissions.
Setting permissions only makes sense on the server side ("Remote System")
and makes no sense to set permissions on your computer files.
To set the permissions, first select a file or directory by highlighting
it. Now click on your right mouse botton and a drop-down menu should
appear. Select "chmod (UNIX)" from the menu. WS_FTP will now ask you what
permissions (owner, group, world) you would like for this file or
directory.
